Aljaz Bedene lost in straight sets to Lucas Pouille in the second round of the Open 13 in Marseille on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old British number four lost 7-5 7-5 to the Frenchman, who now progresses into a quarter-final against either Daniil Medvedev or Jan-Lennard Struff.
Bedene had seen off the challenge of Pouille's compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu in the opening round but will go no further having fallen to the world number 17.
