Agnieszka Radwanska got her Connecticut Open campaign under way with a straight sets win over Jelena Ostapenko.

The top seed, who was handed a first-round bye, had little trouble beating her Latvian opponent as she began her preparations for the US Open with a 7-5 6-1 success.

Tenth seed Elina Svitolina will join her in the quarter-finals as the Ukrainian needed just over an hour to despatch Evgeniya Rodina 6-3 6-1.

Elena Vesnina is also in the last eight and will meet Svitolina as her second-round opponent Anett Kontaveit retired injured with the score 6-4 1-0 in the Russian's favour.

There was a surprise first-round exit for seventh-seed Timea Bacsinszky, though, as she went down in straight sets to Sweden's Johanna Larsson, who was a 7-5 6-2 winner, while Kirsten Flipkens also advanced into the second round with a 6-1 4-6 7-5 win over Belinda Bencic.
