Agnieszka Radwanska won the WTA Finals tournament in Singapore with a hard-fought three-set victory over former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the final on Sunday.

The Polish fifth seed won the first set comfortably but was second best to her Czech opponent in the next before taking the decider.

The 6-2 4-6 6-3 win took just over two hours and was the 17th WTA singles title of Radwanska's career and her third of the year following triumphs in Tokyo and Tianjin.

The result had been in the balance in both the second and third sets with world number six Radwanska having to come back from a break of serve down in the deciding set before recovering to beat the world number five.

In a courtside interview at the Singapore Indoor Stadium Radwanska said: "It means everything to me, in my first final, I get my first win so it couldn't be any better.

"I was doing the right thing in the important moments of a really close match. I had my chances in the second set but it doesn't really matter how I won.

"The serve wasn't a huge weapon today, there were lots of ups and downs and lots of breaks. But in the important moments I was really doing the right things, I think. Of course I had my chances in the second set, but it doesn't matter how I won. I'm extremely happy about this."

Radwanska took the opening game of the first set against serve and then made the most of her opponent's unforced errors to hold and make it 2-0.

The Kvitova serve was broken again in the fifth game and from there Radwanska served out the set 6-2 in just over half an hour.

Both players had their serve broken in the second set and when Kvitova hit back to level it at 3-3 the momentum had swung, another break of serve later in the set setting her up to take it 6-4.

Breaks were traded in the deciding set but at 3-3 Radwanska secured the decisive one.

From there she saw out the match, taking another break on the way to her first WTA Finals success, also becoming the first player to win the title after finishing the round-robin section with one win and two defeats.

Losses to Maria Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta were followed by a win over Simona Halep before a semi-final success against Garbine Muguruza set up the meeting with Kvitova.
