Scotland coach Vern Cotter has called up number eight Johnnie Beattie to join his squad preparing for the Six Nations opener against France in Paris on February 7.

The 29-year-old back-rower, who plays his club rugby for French Top-14 side Castres, arrived at the team hotel on Sunday ahead of the squad's three-day camp at Motherwell.

Cotter named his first 33-strong Six Nations squad last week ahead of the France game, but indicated that he could add to it after last weekenf's final round of European Champions Cup pool games.

Castres lost to Harlequins, but Beattie impressed in the match, scoring a fine try.

A statement said that 34 times capped Beattie had been called up to "reinforce the group" following a spate of injuries to squad players at the weekend,
