Australian National Rugby League strugglers Wests Tigers on Wednesday axed head coach Mick Potter, saying the club needed a fresh approach.

The Tigers finished 13th in the 16-team competition this season and Potter's contract will not be renewed after two years in charge.

"This has been a difficult decision for everyone involved but one that the club believes is in the best interests of a successful future for Wests Tigers," chief executive Grant Mayer said.

Potter had been given three opportunities over the past six weeks to present his plans for the Tigers to the board, but it was not enough to save him.

"Taking this into account, the Wests Tigers board and management agree that a fresh approach is needed and the club will immediately begin a process to identify leading candidates for the role," added Mayer.
