The Winnipeg Jets, last in the National Hockey League's central division, fired coach Claude Noel on Sunday and replaced him with former Carolina and Toronto coach Paul Maurice.

The Jets have lost five games in a row and have managed only 19 wins and 43 points over 47 games.

Noel finished 80-79 with 18 overtime losses in guiding the Jets over their first two seasons since moving to Canada from atlanta, but neither season did Winnipeg reach the NHL playoffs.

The Jets were 37-35-10 in Noel's first season then went 24-21-3 in last year's lockout-shortened campaign.

Maurice, a 46-year-old Canadian, spent the 2012-2013 season in Europe's Kontinental Hockey League after being fired by Carolina in November of 2011.

Maurice has an NHL career coaching record of 460-457-167 over two stints with Carolina, 1995-2004 and 2008-2011 and with Toronto from 2006-2008.

He guided Carolina to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals, where the Hurricanes lost to the Detroit Red Wings.
