Malkin to miss Penguins Sunday NHL game against Tampa Bay

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will miss Sunday's NHL game against Tampa Bay after suffering an apparent head injury on Friday in a game against Florida.

Malkin, the Hart Trophy winner as the NHL's Most Valuable Player last season, didn't take part in Saturday's optional training skate and Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said the Russian center is still being medically evaluated.

"We're waiting to see how he feels and reacts," Bylsma said.

Malkin's head slammed hard into the boards when he fell after being hit by Florida defenseman Erik Gudbranson in the third period of Pittsburgh's 3-1 victory.

He remained on the ice for a time but skating off under his own power.

"He went into the boards pretty darn hard," Bylsma said. "We're not expecting any timeline to the injury or anything."

In 18 games so far in this lockout-shortened season, Malkin has four goals and 17 assists.
