Bengals punter Kevin Huber, leveled by a ferocious hit from Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin on Sunday, won't play again this season.
Huber suffered a broken jaw and according to several media reports a cracked vertebra. The team placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, officially ending his season.
Huber, a Cincinnati native, took a hit to the helmet from Garvin on a play that saw Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown return a punt for a touchdown in the Steelers' 30-20 win.
Many commentators thought the hit was illegal and should have drawn a penalty, since under NFL rules punters and kickers are always considered to be in a defenseless posture.
NFL officials were reportedly reviewing the play but Huber Tuesday declined to comment on whether he thought it was a dirty play.
"It's not my job to make that decision," Huber said.
Going into the game Huber ranked fourth in the league with 41.6 yards per punt.
Cincinnati, who lead the NFC North division but have yet to clinch their playoff berth, signed former Buffalo Bills punter Shawn Powell to replace Huber.
