Astana’s Luis Leon Sanchez has won the Vuelta Ciclista
Region de Murcia opening stage.
This two-stage race in the Murcia region of Spain, had
its second stage from Beniel to Murcia and was over 183km with two hard climbs
of the Alto Collado Bermejo (7.2 km,
7.1%) and the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo (4.4 km, 6.5%) only 12 kms from the
finish line.
Movistar’s
Alejandro Valverde, attacked
on the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo with only Luis Leon Sanchez of Astana able
to mark his move.
The duo
sprinted it out with Sanchez winning in 4.14.43 to win the stage, the overall
classification and the points jersey
It was a
good day for Astana who had stage one winner Pello Bilbao on the podium in
third place, Jakob Fuglsang won the King Of The Mountain jersey and Astana won
the team classification award.
Sanchez
said: “First
of all I have to say about a great team work today. All together we did a very
nice and strong race. Yeah, it was quite difficult to control Valverde on the
final climb, but I was able to follow him and later to control him inside the
final kilometres.
“I did my best in the final and I am happy to take this win. It is an
important result for me since this is my home race. But, the most important is
the way we raced yesterday and today. That was really great!
