'Unhappy' Roy Hodgson Could Leave Crystal Palace in the Summer After Transfer Failures

Roy Hodgson could leave Crystal Palace in the summer unless he is given certain assurances over refreshing his squad, according to reports.

The 72-year-old came to Selhurst Park in 2017 with the club bottom of the Premier League after a disastrous start to the season under Frank de Boer.

The former England manager pulled off a great escape to keep the Eagles up that season, and the club have not looked close to relegation in the two-and-a-half seasons since.

But now, according to the Times, it seems as though Hodgson could be willing to leave Crystal Palace in the summer unless he is given assurances about the club's transfer plans.

The former Liverpool and Fulham coach has been in talks about a one-year extension to his contract, but it is understood that he is unhappy with the club's transfer business in January.

Despite being just six points above the relegation zone, Palace's only senior January signing was a loan deal for Everton forward Cenk Tosun.

Another deal for West Bromwich Albion right back Nathan Ferguson fell through after the Championship club refused to lower their £10m valuation of the player.

Hodgson is understood to be frustrated by the lack of backing from the club hierarchy who are unwilling to sanction any big-money transfers.

Despite spending most of the season comfortably away from the relegation zone this season, Crystal Palace have come under criticism for their perceived negative playing style.

They have scored just 22 goals - fewer than any other Premier League side - and have won by a two-goal margin just once all season.

It is understood that Hodgson has offers from abroad should he leave the Eagles, after previously coaching Italian giants Inter, as well as many other teams outside the UK.

He joined his boyhood club on a two-year contract back in 2017 and signed a one-year extension last season. However, if he fails to sign on for another year, then he will be free to go wherever he wants at the end of the season.
