Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale on a year-long loan deal, with the Welshman finally returning to north London following a seven-year absence.

The 31-year-old has hit some great heights with los Merengues since leaving White Hart Lane in 2013, but he has fallen hugely out of favour and endured a very public spat with both coach Zinedine Zidane and the Madrid fanbase.

Bale recently admitted that he would be open to a move back to the Premier League, and former club Spurs have answered his prayers. The north London side have agreed to sign the Wales international on a one-year loan, and the deal was confirmed on Twitter on Saturday evening, as they welcomed him back home.

The forward joined los Blancos in a deal worth around £85m, and he went on to win two league titles and four Champions League trophies with the Spanish giants. But his importance within the side took a severe hit, and following a disagreement with Zidane, his game time diminished significantly.

The winger's return will come as a huge boost to both Spurs and the player himself then, as he is still revered for his sensational performances in the Lily White jersey. Bale produced one of the best individual seasons in Premier League history during his final year in England, hitting 21 goals in 33 appearances.

He originally joined Spurs from Southampton back in 2007, and he grew to become one of the most celebrated and talented players in the club's illustrious history.

The returning hero will don the number nine shirt this season, as he joins Jose Mourinho's side on their quest to regain a top-four spot, having slipped out Champions League contention last season.

Spurs have been desperate to sign an attacking alternative to current talisman Harry Kane, who has been the club's only reliable source of regular goals for a number of seasons.
