Southampton vs Norwich: 7 Key Facts and Stats to Impress Your Mates Ahead of Premier League Clash

04 December 2019 05:51

It will be a battle between the lower sides of the table on Wednesday night as Norwich face Southampton at St Mary’s, with both teams fighting against relegation.

The Saints witnessed a glimmer of hope at the weekend as they managed to beat Watford 2-1, while the Canaries secured a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Carrow Road.

With just one point separating the two sides, they’ll have everything to play for in this competitive midweek fixture.

However, what facts and stats should you know before kick-off? Thanks to Opta, we’ve got seven for you to sink your teeth into ahead of the game.

A Promising Record for the Saints

Yan Valery,Moussa Djenepo,Sofiane Boufal

According to these stats, it appears that Southampton may have the upper hand ahead of this Premier League fixture.

When it comes to their head to head record, they have lost just one of their last 13 home games against Norwich in all competitions – winning an impressive eight and drawing the other four.

The Saints have also picked up three consecutive wins against the Canaries in their last three home games.

Early Birds

Nathan Redmond

However, funnily enough, Southampton appear to perform better in the early fixtures, compared to evening kick-offs.

They have won just one of their last 12 home evening matches in the Premier League which have taken place later than 7pm, with their last victory resulting in a 2-0 win against Fulham in February.

Worryingly, they have also lost their last three evening games by an aggregate score of 2-15.

On the Road

Yerry Mina,Teemu Pukki

If Southampton have trouble playing at night, then you could also say that Norwich struggle to play on the road. Away from home, the Canaries are winless in their last 14 evening league matches – drawing five and losing nine. Their last victory was against local rivals Ipswich as they conjured up a 2-1 win back in September 1994.

They recently picked up a 2-0 away win against Everton two weeks ago and if they win on Wednesday, it will be their first back-to-back away win since January 2012.

Norwich City have also kept a clean sheet in two of their last three away games in the Premier League. However, this is more than they’ve had in their previous 33 on the road with hopes of keeping another one on Wednesday looking unlikely.

Star Performers

Danny Ings

As ever, Southampton will be reliant on one man in particular as they take on the Canaries. This man is, of course, Mr. Danny Ings. The 27-year-old has scored in all of his previous three league matches for the Saints. The last player to score in four consecutive appearances was Jay Rodriguez in March 2014 and Ings will be hoping to match this come Wednesday.

However, James Ward-Prowse has also been supporting Ings on the scoresheet as all of Southampton’s past 10 Premier League goals have come from either one of the Englishmen, with Ings securing six and Ward-Prowse netting the other four.
