Carlo Ancelotti’s team might have offered their own season a semblance of meaning with a win but the notion seems laughable now: they were listless, gutless, most of the associated pejoratives you can conjure, and the veteran manager faces an uneasy summer attempting to instil an identity worthy of the club’s name.
