Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley reportedly held talks with a group of Mexican businessmen in October to see whether or not they would be suitable to buy the club.

The Orlegi group have been repeatedly linked with taking over at St. James' Park and have now made a third attempt to become the Magpies' owner.

According to The Athletic, Ashley held discussions with a group of potential Mexican investors earlier this year, but it was unclear whether or not this was in fact Orlegi - who had made previous enquiries about buying the club. However, it is now understood that it was the Orlegi group that Ashley spoke with.

Despite reports that the talks were unsuccessful, the Mexican businessmen still feel confident over their chances of taking over in the the north east, and it is once again thought that a deal could be on the cards.

Mike Ashley is wanted out by the majority of Newcastle supporters, so talk of a takeover will be music to their ears. However, the Toon Army have been here many times before over the years and two approaches from Orlegi have already fallen through.

It's believed that on both occasions, Ashley changed his mind when the proposals were set for legal inspection.

However, the Orlegi group - led by Alejandro Irarragorri and director of football Jose Riestra - are thought to be serious bidders with their latest offer currently being looked over by their mergers and acquisitions department for any amendments that may be required.

Orlegi were supposedly linked with making a move to buy Crystal Palace, however, they have since forgotten that ambition, seeking information and advice about Newcastle from prominent names within football.

Newcastle have had a difficult start to the season, but back-to-back victories have lifted Steve Bruce's side to 13th in the Premier League table. However, things are far from rosy at St. James' Park with another campaign of turmoil between club and fans well and truly underway.
