Marcus Rashford Out of Man Utd Squad to Face Liverpool as Club Worry About Extended Absence

Marcus Rashford has been ruled out of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The English striker was forced off against Wolves in the FA Cup in midweek, only 15 minutes after coming on in Wednesday night's 1-0 third round replay win.

He aggravated his back during the Old Trafford encounter and underwent tests in a bid to be fit for the showdown with the Premier League leaders, but has since been ruled out with fears he may be consigned to an extended period out.

This bitter blow comes courtesy of the Telegraph, but while the historic top-flight clash is out of his reach, there are a number of crucial fixtures coming up for United where they may be without their top scorer.

Rashford gave his side glimmer of hope in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg game against Manchester City when he scored a consolation in the 3-1 defeat, but United also face Club Brugge in the Europa League knockout stages in the next month.

Having started every Premier League game this season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Norwegian admitted that the forward had been carrying a back injury 'for a little while'. Initial tests seemed to indicate that he had responded well to treatment ahead of Sunday's match, but the club must now contend with losing their key man for the daunting trip to Liverpool.

Solskjaer revealed on Friday that he would give Rashford every chance to recover in time, but admitted that it didn't look positive.

“I haven't seen him this morning, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I would probably think that he wouldn't be ready, but let's see. There's still 48 hours, more than that, so let's see.”

With Rashford out, it is likely that Mason Greenwood will come into the lineup in his stead. Meanwhile, there are a host of other players unavailable with Paul Pogba out of contention, Luke Shaw sidelined, Eric Bailly still not fit and Marcos Rojo and Scott McTominay still in the treatment room.
