Man Utd 1-1 Fulham: Player ratings as wasteful United slump to draw

18 May 2021 10:00

An Edinson Cavani wonder strike was not enough to earn Manchester United three points as they laboured to a 1-1 draw against already relegated Fulham.

15 minutes in the 10,000 lucky United fans packed inside Old Trafford erupted when Cavani scored an outrageous 40-yard lob to open the scoring. Replays suggested that the striker might have been offside, but there could no taking away from the finish.

Bruno Fernandes - who was involved in the build-up for the opener - then went close to doubling their lead with a pair of fierce long range shots, while Fabio Carvalho spurned a great chance for Fulham before half time.

United continued to dominate possession in the second half but failed to kill the game off, with David de Gea forced into a good save to deny Ademola Lookman at the near post. United did not learn their lesson from this scare, with Bobby Decordova-Reid crossing for Joe Bryan to equalise with 14 minutes of time to play.

Here are your player ratings for both sides from Old Trafford.

Manchester United player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Tuanzebe was staking a claim | Phil Noble - Pool/Getty Images

David de Gea (GK) - 7/10 - Got out well to close the angle for Carvalho in the first half. Then saved again superbly from Lookman. Nothing he could do about the goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 6/10 - Once again showed how much he has improved going forward. Played Decordova-Reid onside for the equaliser and then got sucked in as Bryan finished behind him.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 6/10 - His loose defending allowed Carvalho a clear sight of goal in the first half.

Axel Tuanzebe (CB) - 7/10 - Staked a claim for a place in the Europa League final XI should Harry Maguire miss out with a fine display.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 6/10 - Steady but did not provide too much in the final third due to his inaccurate crossing.

2. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM) - 7/10 - Did some important defensive covering and was close to flawless in possession.

Fred (CM) - 6/10 - Switched the play effectively on several occasions. Neat and tidy but also very safe.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 7/10 - Spritely throughout. He threatened with shots from distance and was his usual creative self.

3. Forwards

An incredible moment | Phil Noble - Pool/Getty Images

Mason Greenwood (RW) - 6/10 - Efficient in possession. Did not have too many chances though, and when he did he could not find the back of the net.

Edinson Cavani (ST) - 8/10 - Moments like that are what football is about. What. A. Strike. United needn't bother going after Harry Kane if Cavani can keep this up next season.

Paul Pogba (LW) - 6/10 - Always involved in the final third. Committed quite a few fouls.

4. Substitutes

Marcus Rashford - 7/10 - Caused Fulham one or two problems.

Amad Diallo - N/A

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Areola was well beaten by Cavani | PHIL NOBLE/Getty Images

Alphonse Areola (GK) - 7/10 - Caught out by Cavani but recovered by making a few top saves.

Mario Lemina (RB) - 8/10 -
Moved into midfield after Reed's injury and was typically industrious. Provided his side with such much-needed bite as well.

Tosin Adarabioyo (CB) - 7/10 -
Solid. One of the Cottagers who should have no shortage of Premier League suitors in the summer.

Tim Ream (CB) - 7/10 -
A bit untidy in possession but he was well positioned for most of the game.

Joe Bryan (LB) - 8/10 -
Put in a committed shift, completing three tackles. Also grabbed the equaliser.

6. Midfielders

Zambo Anguissa did well | PHIL NOBLE/Getty Images

Bobby Decordova-Reid (RM) - 7/10 - Got a stunning assist for the goal, staying onside brilliantly and crossing straight to Bryan.

Andre Zambo Anguissa (CM) - 8/10 - Fulham's best performer. He put in an all-round midfield display and will likely be poached by a Premier League club in the summer.

Harrison Reed (CM) - 6/10 - Forced off in the first half with an injury.

Ademola Lookman (LM) - 7/10 - Went mighty close to grabbing an equaliser just after the break. Full of energy.

7. Forwards

Carvalho missed a great chance | Phil Noble - Pool/Getty Images

Fabio Carvalho (ST) - 5/10 - Missed a big, big chance to equalise in the first half. Enthusiastic but lacked a killer edge at times.

Ivan Cavaleiro (ST) - 5/10 - Managed to sneak in behind the United defence on a few occasions. Fairly withdrawn for the most part, though.

8. Substitutes

What does the future hold for Loftus-Cheek? | Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images

Joachim Andersen - 7/10 - Steady after coming on midway through the first half.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - 6/10 -
Offered little after coming on.
