Liverpool vs Burnley preview: How to watch on TV, live stream, team news, kick off time & prediction

20 January 2021 03:15

Anfield hosts a crucial match on Thursday night as Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool look to get their first Premier League win in five attempts against a struggling Burnley side.

The hosts last won a league game when they thrashed Crystal Palace 7-0 last month but have since drawn three and lost one, scoring just once in the process. The Reds have failed to score in the last three, with their famed attacking trident currently misfiring.

Liverpool's form has resulted in them slipping down to fourth in the table and damaged their hopes of retaining the Premier League crown, with most sides around them hitting good form of late.

Sean Dyche's men are also struggling for form. The Clarets have found the net just once in their last four as well - although that goal came in a win. They've been poor in front of goal all season, however, having the unwanted title of the league's lowest scorers so far with just nine goals in 17 games.

Team news

Diogo Jota is still out of contention through injury, meaning Liverpool's front three will have another opportunity to end their drought in front of goal.

Joel Matip was not deemed fit enough to start against Manchester United on Sunday, but could be brought back into the starting XI to allow Jordan Henderson more influence on proceedings.

For the visitors, the starting lineup is set to look similar to their last match against West Ham. Charlie Taylor is returning to fitness and could come back into the XI, although a late fitness test will determine whether that can happen.

Meanwhile, Dwight McNeil, who has not started a game of football for nearly a month, could come back to provide creativity on the flank.

Predicted lineups

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Thiago, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Burnley: Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters; Brady, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil; Barnes, Wood.

Prediction

Liverpool will likely control possession on Thursday night, but they have struggled to both create and finish off chances, so finding that key pass against the stereotypically rigid, organised and frustrating Burnley defence could prove difficult.

However, with Matip back in the side, Henderson will move into midfield while Thiago looks to control proceedings. With Henderson alongside him, the Spaniard may be afforded a little more attacking license on Thursday.

Liverpool are due a win and need one. They may just have too much for their visitors this time round.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Burnley
