The 2019/20 League One and League Two seasons are expected to be officially abandoned next week, with clubs to be asked by the EFL to vote on how promotion and relegation should be decided.
The Premier League and Championship are pushing ahead to resume the suspended campaign amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, with games to be played behind closed doors.
It has previously been suggested the only way that resuming the League One and League Two season could be viable is if fans are allowed to attend so clubs can collect all-important matchday revenue to stay afloat, but that's an impossibility in the current climate.
The Athletic reports that the EFL will inform clubs in the coming days there is ‘no chance’ of any more games being played this season. Instead, a meeting is expected to include a vote on a satisfactory resolution to the campaign.
The same report goes on to note that a points per game model that is also weighted to reflect the number of home or away games every club has played is the current favourite of several possible options up for consideration.
An unnamed club in League One is said to have prepared a detailed explanation of this particular method, including a full set of final tables, that has been shared with the EFL board.

Playoffs would obviously be scrapped, with all promotions to be automatic.
In League One, there would be no changes in PPG scenario and existing top three Coventry, Rotherham and Oxford – in that order – would all jump up into the Championship for 2020/21.
In League Two, however, there would be. Swindon would go ahead of Crewe to be crowned champions. Plymouth would stay third, but the fourth and final spot would go to Cheltenham, rather than Exeter, who were fourth when the league was suspended.
