Jose Mourinho Sends Scouts to Watch Edin Dzeko as Tottenham Consider Harry Kane Alternative

Tottenham Hotspur manager José Mourinho has ordered scouts to watch AS Roma star Edin Džeko, as he looks to sign a new backup striker.

Club captain Harry Kane has started all but one game in the Premier League this season, missing their 1-1 draw with Leicester City through illness, while the England international's also made five appearances in the Champions League.

Both Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have deputised as Tottenham's centre-forward over the last year, but The Mirror reports new manager Mourinho wants to sign Džeko as a permanent backup for Kane.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international spent four years in the Premier League with Manchester City earlier in his career, scoring 72 goals and picking up 39 assists in 189 appearances under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini.

Since joining Roma in 2015, the 33-year-old has continued his impressive scoring record and Džeko is now sitting as the club's fourth top goalscorer of all-time - behind just Francesco Totti, Roberto Pruzzo and Vincenzo Montella.

Džeko form hasn't gone unnoticed by the decision-makers in the Italian capital either, with the centre-forward signing a new three-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico at the start of this season.

However, with Mourinho apparently still not convinced by teenage forward Troy Parrott just yet, the Portuguese manager is desperate to bring in some kind of insurance policy just in case Kane picks up a knock.

The Mirror's report acknowledges that Džeko's new deal would make a move for the Bosnian difficult to get over the line, although they've suggested the promise of a 'lucrative' end to his career could convince all parties.

Tottenham have also been linked with Metz's breakout striker Habib Diallo in recent weeks, following the Senegal international's impressive start to the season in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, the club are also looking to improve defensively before Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld leave on free transfers at the end of the season, prompting hopeful rumours surrounding a potential move for Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly.
