Huddersfield Town's Steve Mounie Linked With January Exit as Ligue 1 Return Looms

Huddersfield Town striker Steve Mounié has been tipped to leave the club once the transfer window opens in January, following interest from Ligue 1 strugglers Nîmes Olympique.

Mounié only moved to the John Smith's Stadium in 2017, where he's gone on to make 74 appearances across all competitions.

Playing time has been harder to come by under new manager Danny Cowley, and L'Equipe now link Mounié with a return to France with 19th-placed Nîmes targeting the striker as an answer to their goalscoring problems.

Mounié impressed with Montpellier HSC before his move to England and could be tempted with a return to Ligue 1, but it's understood that Nîmes could struggle to match the Huddersfield Town forward's transfer fee or wages.

Town boss Cowley has already opened the door for the likes of that Terence Konogolo, Adama Diakhaby and Isaac Mbenza to leave the club as soon as the transfer window re-opens, while he's also suggested that 'two or three' more players could be on their way out.

Even if the club had planned for Mounié to be on the move next month, the striker's recent performances might make Cowley re-think his plans ahead of the second half of the season.

Huddersfield Town still have a squad which is littered with players that signed when they were desperate to stay in the Premier League - something which has reflected in their performances this season.

The Terriers sit 19th in the Championship table and any early season hopes of bouncing back into the Premier League have quickly vanished.
