Former Aston Villa and Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel has died in a car crash at the age of 37, according to the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association.

The TTFA reported in a statement that Samuel had passed away following a fatal collision on Tuesday morning in England.

The statement read: "We've received some terrible news that former National defender and Ex-Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers player Jlloyd Samuel died in a car crash this morning in England.

"According to reports, Jlloyd was returning home after dropping his kids off to school and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

"The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national teammates at this time extends deepest condolences to his family members both in the UK and here in Trinidad and Tobago."

Born in Trinidad, Samuel moved to England at a young age and spent his teenage years at Charlton and West Ham before moving to Aston Villa in 1998, aged 17.

Samuel made over 150 league appearances for Villa and over 70 for Bolton. He also had loan spells at Cardiff City and Gillingham.

He played for England at youth level and in 2004 he was called up to Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad but was not selected, subsequently choosing to represent the country of his birth.

His application to play for Trinidad & Tobago at the 2006 World Cup was denied by FIFA but he later made his international debut in 2009.

In the later days of his career he spent several years playing in the Iran Pro League before returning to England, where he was most recently player-manager for Egerton FC, a team in the Cheshire Football League.

Aston Villa's players will wear black armbands for tonight's Championship play off semi final against Middlesbrough as a mark of respect.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
