Striker Benik Afobe has confirmed the tragic news that his two-year-old daughter Amora has passed away suddenly after contracting a severe infection.

Afobe, who is currently on loan with Bristol City from Stoke City, revealed that Amora was rushed to hospital on Friday, but a series of complications saw the child's condition take a drastic turn for the worse.

The striker released an emotional statement (via the Stoke Sentinel), in which he revealed that Amora had passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Afobe family have today confirmed the devastating news that their first child, their beloved daughter Amora, 2, passed away late on Friday," he wrote.

"Amora was taken to hospital for treatment after unexpectedly developing a severe infection. Unfortunately she then suffered a number of serious complications and despite doctors doing absolutely everything that they possibly could, Amora passed away peacefully with the love of her family by her side.

"The entire family have been left totally devastated and heartbroken, and would like to ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time."

Stoke offered their support to the forward, adding: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Stoke City are with Benik Afobe following this morning's tragic news. We'll be with you, Benik."

Bristol City took to their official website to dedicate Saturday's 5-2 win over Huddersfield Town to Afobe, having learned of the tragic news immediately after the game.
