Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed out of the US Open after suffering a 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 defeat by Katarina Srebotnik. The number three seed, who won the title at Flushing Meadows in 2004, failed to match her Slovenian opponent in the final set and followed top seed Ana Ivanovic out of the tournament."I didn't play badly," said Kuznetsova. "She just played her best game.

"I was fighting and I wanted so much to win that match. She served very well, she came to the net many times, she was more aggressive than I was."

Elsewhere, Lindsay Davenport was beaten 6-1 7-6 to 12th seed Mario Bartoli, fuelling speculation that the American will retire from competitive tennis.

"It's tough to make any kind of decision in a rash moment," she said.

"There was no decision made before the tournament and I don't think it's time to make a certain statement now."

Jelena Jankovic saw off the challenge of China's Zheng Jie 7-5 7-5 to set up a third round tie with Caroline Wozniacki but the Serbian star admits she is hoping for a far less testing affair after being kept on court for nearly three hours.

"I wish I didn't have any drama in my matches, I wish I would win nice and in a simple way," she told the BBC.

"Just cruise through the match and that's it, but as long as you win, that's what matters."
