Andy Murray moved through to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after Spain's Nicolas Almagro retired from their fourth-round clash due to injury.
Murray was on control at 6-2, 1-0 up when Almagro gave up due to an ankle injury which required treatment at the end of the first set.
Next up for the British number one is Sweden's Robin Soderling, who impressed in seeing off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The major casualty of the day was second seed Novak Djokovic, with the Serb well beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.
Third seed Rafael Nadal almost joined Djokovic in crashing out, before the Spaniard edged past home player John Isner 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
US hopes of success now rest with Andy Roddick, who had few problems in seeing off Austria's Jurgen Melzer 7-6, 6-4.
