World number one Roger Federer suffered a rare defeat to Marcos Baghdatis at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, while a below-par Andy Murray reached the last 16 of the tournament by beating Michael Russell in straight sets.
Federer slumped to only his second defeat in 13 matches this year in the third round of the event against the 27th-seeded Cypriot.
Baghdatis eventually prevailed 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 as he beat Federer for the first time following six successive losses to the Swiss maestro.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Andy Roddick defeated Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-4 to set up a clash with Austrian Jurgen Melzer, while James Blake suffered a shock defeat to the unseeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Fourth seed Murray looked a long way from his best in his 6-3, 7-5 success against Russell and now faces Almagro in the fourth round.
After his victory, the Scot admitted: "He made it difficult for me. He hits a solid ball from the back of the court, he plays very close to the baseline and obviously he's very quick.
"He's got a great attitude, fights really hard and made it difficult."
