World Number Two Roger Federer says he will cut down on his clay events before attempting to win the French Open for the first time next year. The Swiss star will play in the Masters Series events in Rome and Madrid before moving to Paris in May 2009 - slashing in half the number of tournament's he's played in the past. Federer's 2008 was blighted by a debilitating virus and his poor year was compounded when he lost top ranking to rival Rafael Nadal.

Agent Tony Godsick said: "He is not going to overplay next year. He is just going to try to make sure that he peaks for the tournaments that mean the most to him."

Despite winning five US Opens, five Wimbledons and three Australian Opens, Federer has never won the French Open - he's lost to 'King of clay' Nadal in the final on three successive occasions.

He told his website: "I am really pleased with the season the way we have planned it and I am looking forward to an exciting year."
