Mark Foster will carry the British flag at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, it has been announced. The 38-year-old swimmer, who will be competing in the 50m freestyle, is taking part in his fifth Games, and was chosen after each sport nominated one athlete as their candidate to carry the flag. The leaders of each sport then voted, with Foster astonished to be given the nod.

"I was blown away when I was told, it was a big surprise and a huge honour," he told the British Olympic Association website on Wednesday.

"I really wanted to be picked but I didn't totally believe I would be. My heart was pumping when the announcement was made.

"Making the Olympic Games this time around was fantastic in itself, but this has really topped it off. It's phenomenal."
