England's women were denied a shock win in their opening Champions Trophy match as Olympic gold medallists Netherlands salvaged a last-gasp 2-2 draw. Katie Long and Alexandra Danson had fired England, ranked the lowest in the six-team competition, into 2-0 lead in Sydney.

But after Marilyn Agliotti pulled one back, Maartje Paumen scored from a penalty corner with no time remaining as the first game of the Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy ended all square.

"I'm gutted about drawing in the dying minutes when we were two goals up," said England captain Kate Walsh.

In the other games Australia beat Germany 2-0 and defending champions Argentina edged China 2-1.
