Echenique holds narrow lead
"Rafa Echenique maintained his position at the top of leaderboard at the end of the third round at the French Open but with the chasing pack closing in, a thrilling Sunday is guaranteed at Le National."
The Argentine youngster, who stunned the golfing world with a closing albatross at last week's BMW International, went into day three with a two-shot advantage.
A one-under par 70 was enough to retain the lead at 11-under but six players are within just three shots of the lead, the closest being multiple European Tour winner Martin Kaymer at 10-under.
England's Paul Waring is a shot further back at 9-under after carding a third round 68, a score matched by compatriot Seve Benson who sits tied fourth with Richard Green and Peter Hanson.
After the round Echenique said: "That last birdie was very good because the putter just didn't work for me today.
"This is one of the biggest and best events on The European Tour and I believe that I can do it. I did it in the Argentinean Open, so why not here?
'I will try to keep the same strategy as I have all week - try and take irons off of most of the tees and get the putter working again because it wasn't working great today. It would be very big for me to win here."
