Kim on fire at Congressional
Defending champion Anthony Kim has hit the ground running in the AT&T National after firing an eight-under-par round of 62 to lead by two shots at Congressional. The 24-year-old rising star of the PGA Tour won his second career tournament in Maryland 12 months ago and is on course to successfully defend his title after a superb first round.
Kim has a two-shot lead over world number one Tiger Woods, who is playing his last event before beginning his preparations for the Open Championship at Turnberry later this month.
Woods is part of a three-strong group including Bryce Molder and DA Points who all carded 64s on a day of low-scoring on a soft course.
"I got off to a great start. I hit quality golf shots and made putts from 10 to 15 feet," said a delighted Kim.
"I'd like to say it was just me playing fantastic golf, but I got a couple good breaks along the way and drove it pretty well overall.
"I did play very well, but that man (Woods) can go out there and shoot 60."
Woods' round was his lowest in competitive action for almost two years and the world number one also enjoyed his day's work.
"It was nice to get back inside the ropes and try to catch AK," he said. "You don't want to shoot yourself in the foot the first day."
British hopes rest with Justin Rose, who put recent back problems behind him with a round of 67.
However, it was a different story for Paul Casey, who laboured to an opening five-over-par 75 and now seems likely to miss the cut.
