Villarreal defender Gonzalo Rodriguez believes Cristiano Ronaldo will fail to have the same impact in the Champions League this season and that Spanish teams are far stronger than English sides. Manchester United were disappointed to only come away with a 0-0 draw in their opening game at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.United were boosted by the return of Ronaldo, but not even the Portuguese midfielder could inspire the defending champions to an opening victory.

Rodriguez believes Villarreal and other teams know how to contain the threat of Ronaldo and that sides from La Liga have more quality this season to challenge for major silverware.

Rodriguez said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is not a machine. He did not create too many chances at Old Trafford because we marked him really well.

"I believe a draw was a fair result. I admit the Premier League has a lot of stars and a lot of big clubs but I still feel the Spanish League is the best in the world and these games in the Champions League have shown that.

"Villarreal worked so hard against Manchester United and we came away with a great result.

"To stop Manchester United you must control players such as Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney. If we give them the ball and allow them time to play against us they can cause so many problems.

"The group is very even and will stay that way all the way through. There will be no easy games and the key for us will be winning at home"

'Well said Gazzaro - about the Spanish position in Europe at least. I don't entirely agree with your analysis of Rooney though. It'll come. If Villareal play like that for the rest of the campaign, they won't go through, as they didn't want to attack last night. One shot (which should have been a goal) and that was it - over 90+ minutes !'

'What a STUPID COMMENT from Gonzalo Rodriguez!!!!.... How can he say that C. Ronaldo did not create too many chances at Old Trafford because they marked him really well??? The fact is Ronaldo just return from a long injury, and he's just play only final 20-25 minutes of that game. At the moment EPL is the best league in the world, and the amount of 3 English teams were in the semi-final of UCL last season is a great indicator. The 0-0 result between United and Villarreal is not a fair result at all. United should've won by 3-1 from open played or more if the referee award the Red Devils 2 more penalties. The main problem for United, however, at the moment is to find the perfect pair up front who can effectively score goals for them. In my opinion, I think Berbatov and Tevez could be a good choice. However, physically, Manucho pairing with Berbatov could be effective, especially in the air. Anyway, I think Wayne Rooney, with his present form, should be the one that SAF make him sit on the bench. Of course, Rooney is a great fighter. He keep running and chasing the ball for the team. However, what do you really expect from a 27 million pounds striker????…. Some may argue that last season United’ve losted many matches when Rooney didn’t play. This season, however, United’ve already losted twice (against Zenith in Super Cup and against Liverpool which Rooney play full 90 minutes for both matches and didn’t play well at all). In my opinion, based on his current form, Rooney is no where near a so called Top Class Striker. He is very much over valued. His form is no where near his best when he first joined United. He has no sharpness, lack of penetration, and above all, lack of confidence to shoot when the team is needed (Last night match is a great example. On the 72nd minute, Ronaldo played a SUPER BALL to Rooney which he should has scored or at least hit the target. Rooney, however, SELFISHLY choose to pass that big responsibility to Tevez which finally failed. How can he did things like that???)…. In my opinion, I really feel that It’s not good enough for a 27 million pounds striker to just keep running but refuse to take a shot when the team is needed….. It’s not good enough for a 27 million pounds striker to just keep saying that I’m not selfish but never score a goal for the team…. Lack of sharpness, lack of penetration, and lack of confidence… IT”S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!…. Working hard but never score goals is not good enough when you play as a striker, especially when you play for Manchester United and the team pay 27 million pounds for you. With his present form, I think no one, including SAF, will pay 27 million pounds for his signature. With the Return of Ronaldo, Berbatov, and Manucho, I think this is the best time to DROP Rooney and give him more time to re-discover his best form again… '
