Football Legend helps St Johns C Of E Primary School on the road to Old Trafford

With the npower Football League Under 11 Kids Cup Grand Final just around the corner, team members of St John’s C Of E Primary School will be bending it even better than Beckham after a surprise coaching session from legendary footballer and current manager of the Welsh National Football Team, Gary Speed.

St John’s C of E Primary School, have won through qualifying stages and will be representing their local Football League club, Barnet FC in the League 2 Grand Final at Old Trafford on 28 May 2011.  Ahead of the Final, Speed will be coaching the team from St John’s and passing on his words of wisdom to help them try and overcome a team representing Bury.

With an outstanding and accomplished career in football, the current Wales manager is the ideal candidate to help coach the Under 11 Kids Cup Finalists. Aformer captain of his national team, Gary represented his country 85 times and has enjoyed success at four clubs, including Leeds United and Sheffield United.

Gary Speed commented: ‘It’s a great privilege to be supporting grassroots football by working alongside these extremely talented kids. The npower Football League Under 11 Kids Cup really champions our future football players and gives them the opportunity to play in front of a huge crowd at Old Trafford, which is an absolute dream for any young footballer.’

Clare McDougall, Head of Community & Education at npower, said; ‘Gary’s achievements are second to none and he is a national role model for these aspiring kids. His positive attitude along with his wealth of experience is what makes him ideal to coach St Johns C Of E Primary School on their road to Old Trafford and motivate these fine young players to become the country’s future talent.’

The Football League Trust’s General Manager Dave Edmundson said ‘Delivered by The Football League Trust and the community teams at all 72 clubs, this year over 1,800  schools took part across the country meaning over 14,000 children participated at some stage of the competition.

“The impact and increasing influence of The Football League Trust is very apparent by the growing numbers children getting involved in football,” added Edmundson
