John Toshack's six-year spell in charge of Wales has come to an end by mutual consent, according to the Welsh FA.
The 61-year-old had been willing to continue as Wales boss for their "must-win" Euro 2012 qualifiers next month but it has now been confirmed that he has left the post immediately.
Toshack leaves in the wake of last Friday's defeat in Montenegro which got their qualifying campaign off to the worst possible start.
"Wales are still very much in this group and now the decision has been made hopefully they'll be able to get some positive results in the next two games," said the former Swansea City boss.
"If the results do go against us, I think I would have preferred that to happen with me still in charge."
Former Fulham and Coventry City manager Chris Coleman has been installed as the favourite to take on the role while ex-Wales defender Kenny Jackett is also believed to be in the running.
John Hartson, Brian Flynn and Ryan Giggs have also been mentioned as possible suuccessors to Toshack.
