Balancing books gave Brucey bonus
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admits that he was forced to balance the books in order to finance new signings this summer.
While some £18m was spent on bringing Asamoah Gyan, Marcos Angeleri, Simon Mignolet and Titus Bramble to the Stadium of Light – not including any loan fees that may have been spent on Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, John Mensah, Nedum Onuoha and Danny Welbeck – this amount was offset more or less exactly by the sales of Kenwyne Jones, Lorik Cana, Martyn Waghorn, Daryl Murphy and Marton Fulop.
Speaking to The Journal, Bruce said that he accepts that the responsibility of making important transfer decisions is all down to him.
He said: “In the end, the £3million I got from Martyn and the money from selling Lorik and Kenwyne too has enabled me to balance the books.
“They were big decisions, selling Lorik and Kenwyne – but that’s what I get paid for.”
