Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has rubbished the suggestion the Premier League champions’ squad is past their best, and has defiantly told their critics they plan on retaining the title. Sighting Manchester United’s evergreen star Paul Scholes as an example, the England international believes the likes of himself, John Terry and Didier Drogba still have plenty to offer at the highest level.
Having ended Manchester United’s three year dominance of the Premier League by winning last season’s title, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have begun the season in ominous fashion, chalking up two 6-0 victories already.
The 32-year-old is confident he and his teammates, despite their advancing years, can continue for many years to come, and indicates any doubters need look no further than Paul Scholes, whose form for Manchester United has reignited calls for his return to the England fold.
Lampard told Chelsea’s official magazine: “It is a load of rubbish when I hear talk about there only being one or two years left in our spine,
"This has been going on for a year or so.
"Sometimes that is mind games from other managers or press talk and we proved them wrong last year.
"We have got players here who are experienced and you can't buy experience in football - look at Didier, he is a specimen and he will overpower any 24- or 25-year-old.
"People have been waxing lyrical about Paul Scholes, and rightly so, because if you take him out of the United team now, they will want to replace him and they probably won't be able to.''
