Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is leading a silent pursuit of German international Per Mertesacker after the Frenchman refused to rule out a move for the player following the Gunner’s friendly win over SC Neusiedl.

Sport.co.uk contacted the player’s representatives this morning asking for a comment on the speculation, however Mertesacker’s officials refused to comment on the rumours linking their client with a move away from German Bundelsiga club Werder Bremen. Gunner’s manager Arsene Wenger also refused to comment on speculation regarding Mertesacker following Arsenal’s 4-0 friendly win over SC Neusiedl.

The highly-rated centre-half had a consistent World Cup catching the eye of Arsene Wenger who is still in the market for a quality centre half after Sol Campbell chose to join Newcastle United. Wenger has been linked with Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Udinese centre-back Cristian Zapata.

Mertesacker is considering his future at the Bundesliga club with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and German giants Bayern Munchen touted as the two frontrunners  for the 25-year-old.

The German centre-half, who was part of the German national side at the World Cup, has 69 caps for his country at the tender age of 25 and has made 113 appearances in his Werder Bremen career.
