Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the immediate anguish he felt in the aftermath of their 4-1 defeat against Liverpool FC last season. Ferguson claims the result is one of the most painful of his trophy glittered Old Trafford tenure and has since vowed it will never happen again.
Liverpool FC beat Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford, and the surprise element of the result, coupled with Sir Alex Ferguson’s unshakable belief that their lead was undeserved, is the reason for its lasting pain.
Sir Alex Ferguson recalls watching the game back immediately after the defeat last season, and claims the goals Manchester United conceded, particularly Liverpool FC's second and fourth, were “too embarrassing to even think about.”
Speaking before the Premier League champions beat Liverpool FC 2-1 at Old Trafford yesterday, the Manchester United manager told the Sunday People: "Watching the game (Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat against Old Trafford last year) again when I got home was terrible, absolutely terrible. The whole thing was ridiculous.”
"It hurt us because it was a surprise.”
“When you lose a game you can say 'well, we were playing a good team and they have outplayed us.' You look at that situation in a different light if that happens.”
"You hold your hands up and say they were better. But that wasn't the case against Liverpool.”
“We were coasting. It was unbelievable - if you look at the goals again it's too embarrassing to even think about them.”
"Their first and fourth goals were long punts down the middle that went straight through us. That was down to concentration and it won't happen again, you can be sure of that."
