Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Danny is hoping his long-awaited comeback from injury can reignite interest from Chelsea FC. The 26-year-old playmaker ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while training with the Russian giants 10 months ago, and is due to play his first competitive match on Saturday.
The talented midfielder, who was signed by Zenit for a reputed £25 million following Andrey Ashavin’s decision to join Arsenal in 2008, claims he was on the verge of joining Premier League chasing Chelsea FC prior to his injury, and he hopes his performances over the next few months can not only spark further interest from the West London based club but also see him return to the international fold with Portugal.
The 26-year-old scored the winner against Manchester United in the Super Cup two years ago capping off a man-of-the-match performance, and Danny suggests plying his trade in the Premier League remains an unfulfilled ambition.
The Portuguese international is quoted by the Mail saying: “The injury made it a very difficult time for me,”
“It prevented my transfer to Chelsea, for example, and even before the injury, I nearly went to Juventus.”
“But I understand their position. They have to think twice before hiring a player who has an injury.”
