The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate believes the Premier League title race will go right down to the wire this season, but he suggests Arsenal FC’s run-in could give Arsene Wenger’s side the edge over Chelsea FC and Manchester United.

Manchester United currently top the table ahead of Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC, but Southgate suggests the latter’s ability to remain in touching distance despite being written off on numerous occasions already this season, could prove crucial as the Premier League season reaches its climax.

Manchester United and Chelsea FC still have to play each other at Old Trafford, while Liverpool FC could also play a major role in the title shake up, because both Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti must lock horns with Rafa Benitez again this season. Arsenal FC on the other hand, on paper at least, have a far more favourable run in, and Southgate intimates the Gunners have a superb chance of winning the title.

The former Middlesbrough manager told Sport.co.uk: “I could give you a really good reason why all three could win it, but the team that keeps getting ruled out are Arsenal and it is amazing that they are still there.”

“Fixture wise the Gunners have a better run-in.”

“I wouldn’t bet on anybody at the moment as it is so tight but I would certainly not rule out Arsenal.”

“There is an interesting scenario with United and Chelsea having to play each other and both of them facing Liverpool as well as a couple of other big games.”

“I wouldn’t put big money on them but watch out for Arsenal.”

“That being said you’d be foolish to write-off any of the three sides. United have been unbelievable at keeping pace despite their defensive injuries and Chelsea have looked the strongest all season but somehow Arsenal are still there. It is remarkable really.”

Gareth Southgate’s full interview with Sport.co.uk to follow shortly.
