Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has offered his sympathies to the supporters of Liverpool FC suggesting the American owners at Anfield had robbed the club of it’s soul.
Roberto Martinez’s Wigan Athletic side confined Liverpool FC to their ninth Premier League defeat of the season on Monday night, to leave Rafa Benitez’s side a point behind fourth place Tottenham but having played a game more.
Whelan suggests Liverpool FC’s owners do not understand the feeling for the club because they are not British and intimated the club were a ‘mess’. The Wigan Athletic chairman expressed his deepest sympathy for the Anfield faithful suggesting ill-feeling between the fans and their owners was probably now affecting the players.
Whelan told Sky Sports News: "The big sympathy I have is for the Liverpool supporters because they are a fantastic lot.”
"Liverpool are in a mess.”
“The owners, being American, I don't think they feel what we (British club owners) feel.”
"I'm really, really sorry for their supporters.”
“We went to Anfield earlier in the season and there's absolutely no atmosphere and no heart at all at present.”
"The supporters feel that and I think the players are starting to feel it."
