Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney and Chelsea front man Didier Drogba are the joint favourites to win the Football Writers Player of the Year Award according to sports bookmaker Stan James.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has been in stunning form for Sir Alex Ferguson this season netting 23 goals in 31 appearances for the Old Trafford club, compared to his 20 goals in all competitions last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson lost playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo last summer to Real Madrid, and the experienced Scot has seen Wayne Rooney become the pivotal figure in the Red Devil’s push for honours in 2010. Sports bookmakers Stan James price Rooney at 3/1 to win the coveted gong, alongside Chelsea star Didier Drogba.

Despite leaving England to play for his homeland, the Ivory Coast, in the African Cup of Nations Didier Drogba is still rated as joint favourite by Stan James, particularly after the Ivorian’s demolition of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal at the weekend. Drogba has scored 22 goals in 26 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club this season, which is already an improvement on last campaigns 14 in 42 games.
