Arsene Wenger refused to confirm that Arsenal would be making a move for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh despite the Moroccan international being free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club ahead of a possible summer move.
The 26-year-old attacker declared last week that his preference would be to sign for the Gunners despite being touted as a possible recruit for several clubs across Europe. Liverpool and Juventus are both thought to be in the hunt for one of Europe’s hottest properties after Chamakh helped lead Laurent Blanc’s side to the Ligue 1 championship last term.
Speaking to the media ahead of Arsenal’s crunch Premier League tussle with Liverpool, Wenger stated:
“Chamakh talks to many clubs. He is entitled to.
“He is free to sign where he wants. I cannot interfere in that.
"We are talking to nobody. We are focusing on tomorrow's game."
Arsenal had been expected to sign a striker during January with Robin van Persie, Eduardo da Silva and Nicklas Bendtner all struggling with injuries, however, the thrifty Gunners opted to not to spend and instead rely on their current squad.
