Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara believes that John Terry was wrong to wait for a showdown with Fabio Capello while allegations about his personal life filled the pages of the nation’s press. Speaking about the recent decision to strip the Chelsea defender of the England captaincy, the former player-turned-analyst stressed that the 29-year-old would have been much better served by stepping down from the role of his own accord rather than leave the decision up to his disciplinarian coach.
Terry has managed to put the off-field storm behind him while on the pitch, turning in impressive performances for Chelsea against Burnley, Hull City and Arsenal, however, Kamara believes that the general public’s perception of him as a role-model has been seriously damaged.
“At the end of the day John Terry should have resigned, it's as simple as that. If he had taken some good advice last Monday after all this had come out, he would have done the honourable thing and offered to resign.
“England would have accepted that, but people would have seen a humble side to Terry's character and then there would have been a way back for him. Time is a great healer and slowly people would forget the scandal and remember the good things he does as a player.
“ After a while you serve your sentence and you learn from your mistakes. People deserve opportunities to reform themselves and maybe he might have got the armband back in the future. However, failing to offer to resign was a big mistake. There's no way back for him now.”
