Real Madrid star lauds Manchester United legend as the best ever
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has named Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel as the greatest goalkeeper of all time. Schmeichel won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League during his glittering career under Sir Alex Ferguson and Casillas believes the former Danish international is the best the game has ever seen.
Schmeichel played a total of 292 league games for Manchester United in a trophy laden career at Old Trafford, and the Real Madrid number one suggests the great Dane had all the attributes that make a brilliant goalkeeper.
Casillas suggests the Manchester United legend was physically imposing while also being very agile. The Spaniard intimates the player, signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Brondby for just £530,000, was the best shot stopper and distributor the game has ever seen.
The Real Madrid star told Spanish media: “If I were to choose my all time number one, then it has to be Peter Schmeichel.”
“For me, simply the best”
“He was a big man and a tremendous shot stopper, yet despite his build he was unbelievably acrobatic and had amazing reflexes.”
“His size and personality made him a very imposing presence and, like all great keepers, opposition forwards were intimidated by him.”
“His distribution and clearances from corners were often lethal and I remember seeing more than one goal scored by Manchester United that came about after just one pass following a throw by Peter Schmeichel.”
