Greaves: Terry must offer to resign
England and Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves has today told talkSPORT, the UK’s only national commercial speech radio station, under-fire England captain John Terry should offer to resign his England captaincy. But at the same time offer to stay on.
Speaking to Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs on their eponymous afternoon show, Greaves was asked for his thoughts on the decision facing John Terry – whether to resign or not. “If I were John Terry, and I’m not sure if his advisors would advise this,” said Greaves. “If I were him I would offer my resignation to the [England] manager [Fabio Capello] and I would say ‘I’m still available for the captaincy and if you want me as captain then I will continue.’
“But I would offer my resignation. That might ease the situation for John Terry and the situation in general because it’s now been blown out of all proportion. It’s happened. When you look at it what is it all about?”
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he and his captain John Terry will discuss the possibility of the defender taking a break from football, in light of the revelations surrounding Manchester City star Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.
The Chelsea captain is alleged to have had an affair with the Manchester City defender’s ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel, despite he and Bridge being England colleagues and former club teammates, and since the allegations came to light the 29-year-old England captain has been plagued by the paparazzi amid yet further tabloid tales.
After Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Hull City, during which Terry was afforded a hostile reception throughout, Ancelotti confirmed he and the Stamford Bridge talisman would discuss a possible break after their Premier League matches with Arsenal and Everton and prior to the Cardiff City FA Cup tie. Such is the public reaction to Terry’s reputed extra-martial indiscretion with the Manchester City player’s former beau, many have called for Terry to be axed from his role as England captain. Prior to any decision, reports suggest Fabio Capello will seek out Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge and indeed Terry, to discuss the implications on the national side. Although at the forefront of the news, Ancelotti and Chelsea have vowed to stand by the player, but the Italian claimed Terrry could take abreak in order to sort out his marriage.
The Chelsea manager is quoted by the Times: “It’s an issue for me and John Terry,”
“If he needs holiday, he will have holiday. If not, he will play against Cardiff. I’ve not had any conversation with him yet.”
“For him nothing changes and he continues to play a very good game.”
“Every game he’s living a very good moment and every game he is doing his best.”
“The team is focused on every game. Sometimes we can play good football, sometimes we have more difficulties, but our concentration is always top. The atmosphere in the team is very good; nothing changes.”
