We are not a selling club, absolutely not
Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow insists the cash-strapped Premier League club will not be selling either Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard and defiantly told their doubters that Liverpool would pip Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa to fourth place in the Premier League. Purslow claimed they operate like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, but unlike their rivals they “do not have two first XIs” because Liverpool “do not have that financial capacity”.
Liverpool have closed the gap in the race for fourth place to within one point of Tottenham, and ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa, and although still someway adrift of their perennial top four luminaries Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, Purslow claimed the club’s well publicised financial concerns would not have any baring on their ability to compete at the top of English football.
Reports over the last few months have intimated that if Liverpool fail to finish in the top four, then the club’s beleaguered American owners would have to sell Torres and Gerrard, with Manchester City reportedly willing to pay £100 million, yet Purslow claimed that was not the case and insisted Liverpool would finish alongside Arsenal, Manchster United and Chelsea.
The Liverpool chief executive told Spain based daily AS: “We are not a selling club, absolutely not
“Liverpool is one of the big four clubs in the world.”
“We pay salaries and transfers at the level of the top four in this league and that is the sporting level I hope to maintain.”
“Our problem is that we do not have two first XIs, as other clubs do. We do not have that financial capacity.”
Purslow claimed despite their inferior finances, the club would finish inside the top four.
He concluded: “We will be in the Champions League, for sure,”
