Klinsmann courts Anfield role
According to the Sunday People, Jurgen Klinsmann would be interested in taking over from Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez having initially rejected the club’s advances two years ago. The Premier League club allegedly approached the former Germany and Bayern Munich boss in 2007 with the clubs’ co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks having earmarked him as their first choice to succeed the then under-fire Benitez. The Sunday tabloid claims the former Tottenham striker would be very interested in a managerial role at Anfield, however it suggests the 44-year-old is no longer their first choice. The newspaper intimates Aston Villa’s Martin O’Neill would be heir number one candidate should they decide to part with Benitez which looks increasingly unlikely.
Liverpool’s American owners have always insisted the Spaniard’s position at the club is not under threat despite their indifferent start to the season, and having recently signed a new contract, Benitez’s future at Anfield is seemingly assured.
