Top Ten: Eastern European Premier League imports
Ever since the fall of the Iron Curtain, the stature of football in Eastern Europe has grown immeasurably. The recent World Cup qualification success of Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia, as well as the recent achievements of Croatia, Russia and the Czech Republic serve as prime examples of the quality which abounds in the region. As the football has improved, it is only natural that players from those nations are testing themselves in the best league in the world – the Premier League. Sport.co.uk charts the Top Ten Eastern Europeans to play in the EPL. Making the list is an Arsenal star who has made an immediate impact for Arsene Wenger’s side since moving from Russia, as well as former Rea Madrid striker who excelled at Highbury. Manchester United had a flying winger who later appeared for Everton and indeed briefly their bitter rivals Manchester City, while Chelsea and Portsmouth had a politician in their midst’s. Tottenham sold their languid Bulgarian to the current league champions for a club record fee, while Chelsea’s record buy was a once prolific AC Milan forward. Liverpool have a towering Slovakian tailor made for England’s top tier, while a Czech and a Belarusian also get a mention. Can you think of any others? Have your say in the comments section below.
