Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has slammed Raymond Domenech for leaving Patrick Vieira out of the French squad to face the Republic of Ireland tomorrow. Petit claims the former Highbury hero, who formed a brilliant partnership with Petit in the Premier League, remains the best in his position in France and should have been included because their opposition would be all too aware of his on-field presence.

Petit told the Daily Mail: “The Irish players are based with English clubs and all know Patrick. They know what an impact he makes.”

“When you are up against someone who has made your life a misery for years, you lose confidence in yourself.”

“Raymond Domenech has chosen to deprive himself of Vieira's experience and vast knowledge of British football. Patrick ought to have at least been in the squad.”

“There is no French player better than him in his position. He is a competitor with lots of pride and self-confidence.”
