The Sun newspaper claims Bolton are ready to make a £4 million bid for Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll. Megson sees the England Under-21 international as the ideal long-term successor to Reebok talisman Kevin Davies.

Carroll has been in fine form for Chris Hughton’s side, most recently tormenting the usually unflappable Chris Morgan of Sheffield United, and the 20-year-old has established himself as an ideal target man at St James’ Park. The local born forward was recently called up to Stuart Pearce’s latest Under-21 squad.

Megson is expected to launch a bid for the player in the January window.
